Episode 31 - “City on the Sea”
Adel in Syria.
A bit of recent history of Syria. Adel was in Latakia.
IMPORTANT: I just found what I consider a gold mine filled with gold mines. It is a blog that chronicles the emerging Iraqi blogosphere. It links to an incredible amount of blogs written by Iraqis both in Iraq and in exile. They aren’t afraid to give their own thoughts but they don’t censor the voices they don’t agree with. It represents everything that is great about this new era of citizen journalism. Anyone with even a passing interest in Iraq could get lost among these links for hours. They link everyone from my old favorite Healing Iraq to HTB viewer Konfused Kid to an unabashedly sectarian blog (speaking of which, there is an interesting defense of sectarianism on that blog). Also, as a devout beer enthusiast, I was completely intrigued by this guide to drinking beer in Baghdad. Forgive me if I never post any more videos here because I’m too busy reading all these blogs….
I know a few people saw us on NBC News. Can someone post in the comments what the story was like? Here at Chat the Planet we didn’t get to see it. Also, we have been getting some press in countries all over the world. Poland, Brazil, Denmark, etc. If anyone can snap pictures of themselves holding articles about us a la me and my colleague, I’ll be sure to post them.

Adel, I hope your father is able to find a job somewhere. Has he tried the UAE?
I hear sadness in your voice, and I see it in your eyes, it seems to be there all the time, I’ve seen it in all the videos, and I find it hearbreaking. You deserve better, Iraqis deserve better than this constant fear and stress.

This comment really belongs under “Nothing But Guitar” probably, but it’s an older vlog ; so I’m making my comment here. There’s been talk that the guys like some country music and one of the country music stars has a new song out with a video. I’m bringing it up because in his video he has quick flashes of life in different cultures and he has three of those with Muslims in it. I thought you might be interested in viewing it. Hi guys, congratulations for your job. It´s fantastic to see that there is more than war and politics in Iraq, youngs like you are trying to live in a better way and also giving us some hope.

Syria is very beautiful and peaceful looking. I never would have imagined.
I can understand wanting to distance yourself from the news. I do this “news fasting” sometimes just because I’m a very sensitive person and constantly hearing of the violence and hatred in the world causes me deep sorrow.
I hope your father has found a job.

Not to detract from Adel’s new post from Latakia — looks beautiful, but I agree with Samara that Adel sounds and looks sad.
Wish we could cheer you guys up.
This is my first time commenting & it is mostly to show you that I, too, have blogged about HTB. I hope you don’t mind. I had to point out to my readers that your blogs about your school/education experiences are smiliar to the ones in my own research … and also reflect what some of the big agencies are saying about education during war and conflict.

Does Israel allow Iraqis to immigrate? I looked at the Syria entry in the Wikipedia. They actually have a holiday for the Yom Kippur War, when they and Egypt bombarded Jews in the synagogues of Israel on the holiest day of the year. Funny thing is the in 2 days the Israeli army bounced back and drove the Syrian armies back out of Israeli land. A holiday , give me a break. Here are the casualties:

Arab (Syrian, Egyptian, Jordan and Iraq

Adel.. I wish you can feel safer everyday you wake up in Baghdad. Iraqis are asking for safety, and it is not much to ask. But, safety is everything.. so it is too much to ask unfortunately. Good luck on your exams, and I wish you can enjoy the Syrian safety again soon with your family.
